Can I use Dynamics 365 without a Microsoft partner?

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

Yes for the pure subscription — Microsoft sells Dynamics 365 direct through the web store, and Business Central and the CE apps provision themselves in minutes. But you almost certainly want a partner for the implementation: data migration, integrations, security roles, training, and the two hundred small decisions that determine whether the system works in six months. Buying direct and implementing yourself is realistic for tiny scope; anything beyond it becomes an expensive DIY project.

Microsoft's partner ecosystem exists because their products are frameworks, not turnkey applications. A Business Central tenant with no customisation, no integrations, and one legal entity can be implemented by a competent internal team. A Sales tenant that needs custom entities, security-role hierarchies, and Copilot for Sales rollout will consume more internal time than the partner fee would have cost.

The right test is time-to-value: could your team ship this in eight weeks alongside their day jobs, without cutting corners on security, data quality, and change management? If the honest answer is no, a partner pays for itself. If yes, buying direct via CSP or the web store and implementing internally is a legitimate model.
