How is Dynamics 365 licensed?
By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg
Per named user per month, priced per app, with a full price for a user's first Dynamics 365 app and a lower 'attach' price for every additional app that user needs. Team Members is a cheap read-and-light-write licence for occasional users. Business Central is licensed separately with its own SKU set (Essentials, Premium, Team Members).
Every Dynamics 365 buyer has to understand three things: the base-plus-attach model, the Team Members boundary, and the Business Central split. Base-plus-attach means a Customer Service agent who also uses Sales pays full price once and attach price for the second app — but attach prices only apply to further apps, never to the first. Get the base-app choice wrong and every subsequent SKU costs more than it should.
Team Members is where most licence mistakes happen. It is genuinely cheap, but the entitlements are narrow: read anything, update accounts, contacts, and personal records, submit expenses and time. It is not a discounted full user — using it to bypass a Sales or Customer Service SKU violates the terms and Microsoft audits for it.
Business Central is priced and licensed independently of the rest of Dynamics 365. Its Essentials/Premium/Team Members model is unrelated to the CE base-plus-attach world; a user with a BC Essentials licence does not get any Sales, Customer Service, or Field Service rights.
