How long does a Business Central implementation take?
By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg
Ten to twenty weeks for a single-entity SMB with standard finance, inventory, and sales — assuming a partner-led implementation on Microsoft's Success by Design or Sure Step method. Multi-entity, multi-country, or manufacturing scope pushes it to six to twelve months. Any partner who quotes 'four weeks live' is quoting the technical install, not the business change.
The variance is not in the software — a fresh BC SaaS tenant is provisioned in minutes. It is in data migration, integration to whatever the customer still runs (payroll, CRM, warehouse, e-commerce), user training, and iterating on real-world transactions in a conference room pilot before cut-over. Skip any of those and go-live happens on time but users cannot post an invoice on day one.
A defensible plan books time for a data-migration dry run, at least one full month of parallel or shadow-mode running for the general ledger, and a hypercare window after go-live where the partner remains on site or on call. Companies that succeed on the short end of the range have very clean data and no legacy customisations to preserve.
