Is Microsoft Dynamics 365 the same as Microsoft 365?

By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg

No. Microsoft 365 is the productivity suite — Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, SharePoint, OneDrive, Entra ID. Dynamics 365 is the business-applications family — Sales, Customer Service, Field Service, Business Central, Finance, Supply Chain, Customer Insights. Different products, different SKUs, different admin surfaces; they integrate deeply but are licensed and bought separately.

The confusion is understandable — both are '365', both are Microsoft, both are cloud-first, and both are administered through admin.microsoft.com and Entra ID for identity. The dividing line is intent: Microsoft 365 makes people productive across email, documents, and meetings; Dynamics 365 runs the sales, service, and finance processes those people work in.

In practice most organisations buy both. Dynamics 365 assumes an M365 tenant for identity, Teams and SharePoint integration, and Copilot experiences. Buying Dynamics 365 without any M365 is technically possible but unusual, and losing the productivity integrations makes it a worse product.
