Should I use Copilot Studio or Copilot for Dynamics 365?
By Emil Björk · Microsoft business apps consultant, Gothenburg
Copilot for Dynamics 365 is the built-in Copilot experience inside each app — inline summaries, next-best-action suggestions, and record-level chat that Microsoft ships and licenses per app. Copilot Studio is the low-code builder for custom agents that live outside those defaults — bespoke conversation flows, custom knowledge sources, and agents that other apps embed. Use both; they solve different problems.
If a Sales rep wants a 'summarise this opportunity' button on the record, Copilot for Sales is the answer — the experience is already there, and building it in Copilot Studio would duplicate what Microsoft already ships. If the same company wants an agent that answers partner-portal questions from their own knowledge base and hands off to a live human when it gets stuck, that is a Copilot Studio project.
The two are not competitive: Copilot Studio agents can be surfaced inside Dynamics 365, and the built-in Copilots reuse the same underlying agent runtime. The decision is 'is this a first-class in-app experience Microsoft already covers' vs 'is this something my organisation needs to design and own'.
